“Our team constantly redefines the limitations of possibility and powers through every project.”

Our Vice President Mike Nauton was recently featured in Tower Times magazine, sharing his experience in the industry. His story is a testament to the opportunity and growth that can be achieved at Velex.

How long have you worked at Velex?

I started with Velex eight years ago as a Tower Technician. The road since then has been challenging but rewarding.

How did you get into/why did you choose this industry?

Honestly, I just kind of fell into the industry. I was a young man with a young family, and I was looking for a career to grow in, where I could take care of my family. I found an opportunity with Velex and an industry that I have grown to love for its fast pace and impact to our world.

What does your typical day entail?

My day starts with the sunrise on the east coast and ends with the sun setting on the west coast (cliché, I know). We have teams nationwide and I start my day by communicating our action plans to each region with the help of our project management platform AccuV. As the day goes on, we adjust and address any issues that come up to drive projects forward. By day’s end, as long as crews are happy and we are on schedule, I feel like it was a good day.

What is an aspect of your role you enjoy the most?

The opportunity to coach and support our growing crews is what I enjoy most about my role. Being unstoppable and seeing past obstacles is an approach that came in the early days, and I still get to see it flow through the entire company. Our team consistently redefines the limitations of possibility and powers through every project.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Watching my two beautiful daughters grow into young women is what I am most proud of. Everything I do is for my family and watching them grow and mature is amazing. On the professional side, I have had the privilege to work with people from all different backgrounds and through the mentorship and training Velex provides, I get to watch them grow and build rewarding careers.

What is a stressful part of your job?

Velex has grown substantially over the years. We started with just a handful of internal tower crews in 2013 and are now one of the largest technical field services companies in the U.S. Managing the productivity of our crews and the deliverables we have set is a challenge that does bring on stress, but the way we see it—challenges are just opportunities waiting to be realized.

What is an issue you would like resolved?

Management in this industry can be complicated, resulting in delays and miscommunication. We continue to tackle this challenge every day and believe we have the organizational strategy, team, and tools in place to continually improve and optimize.

Do you have a personal mission statement?

Love, Labor, Learn. Find what/who you love, labor for it and learn all that you can about it. â What is one thing you would like to improve? I really want to highlight this career path as a viable option for young people who aren’t interested in going to college. Through strong work ethic and great training, I have built a career my family is proud of and have helped others do the same. There’s so much opportunity in this industry if you take hold of it.

What are your hopes for the industry?

My hope is that the industry continues to impact the ways we can communicate in other industries, especially education, health care, and manufacturing. As technology progresses, I’m eager to see new and more efficient processes that improve quality of life.

What advice would you give to new hires?

You define your own limitations, no one else. Take the time to invest in yourself and learn the standard but explore new processes. When you invest in yourself and commit to your personal growth, the organization will take notice and continue to feed that drive.

What is something on your bucket list?

A family trip to travel through Europe, specifically Ireland. Traveling to different parts of the country has always been on my bucket list but growing up my opportunities were limited. Kudos to Velex for allowing me the opportunity to see the whole country.

Do you have a hobby/hobbies?

I enjoy spending quality time with family and enjoying one another’s company. I also enjoy working out and working around my property.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

We are at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution. The work we do every day to build out the communication infrastructure provides a better tomorrow just as the railroads in the 1800’s did. It is a privilege to be part of this industry and time in history and I hope those looking for a great career will join us!
